Glazed office partitions provide the ideal way to allow natural light into our working environment. Natural light is not on its own however, in contributing to maintaining our mental health in the workplace: Suppression of noise is also a key factor, and more importantly, we cannot concentrate in a noisy environment.

We are more productive when excessive noise is kept at bay! Results of experiments completed by Simon Banbury and Dianne C. Berry published in 2011 show that both speech and office noise can disrupt performance on memory for prose and mental arithmetic tasks, and the effect is independent of the meaning of the irrelevant speech.

If the ambient office noise is expected to be low, and conversation confidentiality is unimportant, then a single glazed system may be the optimum solution, Otherwise, it would be prudent to examine the below table and select a Double/Dual Glazed system with an acoustic level more suited to your specific office environment:

Acoustic Partitioning Selection Criteria

dB Rw rating of System offered Communication Privacy System selection
25db Rw Low to normal speech can be overheard and interpreted easily Single Glazed
30dB Rw Standard to Loud speech can be overheard and interpreted easily Single Glazed
35dB Rw Loud speech can be distinguished and interpreted under normal background levels Single Glazed
40dB Rw Loud speech can be heard but not easily distinguished Single Glazed or Dual Glazed
45dB Rw Loud speech can be heard but not distinguished Dual Glazed
50dB Rw Very Loud speech or Shouting can be heard but not distinguished Dual Glazed

Differences in Noise Volume Levels and Levels of Perceptibility in General:

1dB is not practically noticeable

3dB is just perceptible

5dB is clearly different

10dB halves/ doubles the noise perception

Profile Systems and Acoustic Ratings

  • Our 25mm Single glazed system is assessed up to 40dB Rw
  • Our 54mm and 105mm Dual glazed systems are assessed up to 52dB Rw, 54dB Rw when glazed with special glass

The acoustic ratings are generally dependent on the glass thicknesses.

Standard colours off-the-shelf are Black, White and Grey. All other colours are available on a longer lead time.

In order for Crofton Interiors to help you in the most effective and efficient way possible, your enquiry should have a specification which includes:

The Fire resistance Eurocode Classification. For Doors and Screens separately e.g. E 30, EI 30, E 60, EI 60, EI 1201
Glass Joints Butt Jointed Glass-to-Glass joints or Fully Framed Glass panes Door Functionality Latched on Lever handles/ Unlatched Non rebated on Push/Pull Handles/ Panic Function (EN 179 or EN1125).2
Paint Specification Standard RAL or Metallic RALAcoustic requirements
Steel Type Mild steel or Stainless Access Control Requirements Maglock / Electric Lock / Electric Strikes
Floor Plan Drawings Elevation Drawingsshowing the layout of the glazed screens and doors
Bill of Quantities or Schedule

1 Non-Eurocode fire classifications for Glazing Systems (e.g. ambiguous descriptions such as “FD30”, “30/30”, “30 minutes” “FR30”) are a thing of the past and are the single biggest factor causing serious regulatory and cost increase issues across the industry from enquiry stage to Practical completion. Getting this right is half the battle.

2 If this is not known, please let us know the building tenancy arrangements (single/multiple), floor occupancy factor, perceived frequency of use of the door.

Some notes for your consideration:

  • The Acoustic Ratings offered by all Glazed Office Partitioning Contractors are dB Rw which means that the stated dB Rw acoustic rating (weighted sound reduction index for the human ear) of the system is the rating achieved under laboratory test conditions in accordance with EN ISO 717: 2013 (still current as at March 2020). It is not possible or advisable for a Glazing subcontractor to prove or offer a site tested result (dB R’w) due to various site specific factors, the most relevant one being flanking sound transmission through the structures that the glazed partition is affixed to.
  • Expect a site test result to always be less than the result of laboratory test conditions.
  • Most doors will have a lesser acoustic rating than the screens they are installed into.
